Mikhail Gubin | Queens, New York USA

MIKHAIL GUBIN was born in Kharkov, Soviet Union, now Ukraine, in 1953. From a child Mikhail show a disposition to drawing and from age of 4 he took private lessons in art. In 1978-1981 he attended Art and Tech College of Zagorsk in Moscow region.

Gubin came to artistic maturity before the social reforms of Perestroyka, at time when avant-garde art was relegated for surreptitious “apartment exhibitions” where painters dared show their work only to a few trusted fellow artists and friends.

Gubin's and others calls for artistic freedom led to trouble with the authorities; he brought his family to New York in 1989 and became a U.S. citizen in 1995.
