I remember coming home from school to the sounds and smells of my mother canning the vegetables from our garden or the pink applesauce she'd made after a day at the orchard. She would have us all in the kitchen helping peel and chop fruits or vegetables or prepare the jars when we least wanted to and would rather be outside playing.

When I grew up and had a garden of my own, I was right back in the kitchen with my own jars and canning pot and my house sounded and smelled the same as 20 years before. And beside me were my young daughter and son learning from me what I'd learned from my mother.
