"Vineyard" 2009 | Mixed Media | Size = 24" X 36"
This painting was inspired by a recent tour I took to Napa Valley while visiting the San Francisco, California area. I tried to mimic the almost chaotic, energetic direction of the vines with the lines in this piece. The yellow/gold splash of color on the right hand side of the canvas is representational of the sun beating down – dripping it’s warmth and heat to the earth.
This work is created on stretched canvas. I never start a painting with just a white, blank canvas. My work begins by adding bits of torn paper, a variety of acrylic mediums for different textures, glue and splashes of gesso. I then apply acrylic paint watered down or with a dry brush effect; layer upon layer until the desired result is reached. I sometimes scratch into the surface to reveal the colours below or pour water on top and remove the colour completely. And like tying a bow or a ribbon, I sometimes pour a stripe of colour on top of the entire surface symbolizing the piece is finished.
